Why farm shops?
Five good reasons to shop local
You know where your food comes from
At the farm shop you can ask the person who made the food how the animals live and how the product is made. Six in ten Norwegians worry about animal welfare, but only one in five feel they know enough about it.
Food with character, and what's in season now
Cheese from the farm dairy, honey from the apiary, beer from the micro-brewery, jam from a family recipe. Small-scale producers make food with a story and character you rarely find on ordinary supermarket shelves.
The money stays in the local community
Local food and drink from Norwegian farms was sold for around NOK 12 billion in 2023. When you buy directly from the farm, the money goes to the people who made the food and stays in the village.
You support Norway's food preparedness
Norway covers only around 40 per cent of its food needs with Norwegian resources when imported animal feed is not counted. Farms that live by producing food are part of what makes us safer.
It's an experience, not just a purchase
You meet the farmer, see the landscape the food comes from, and many have a café, open farm days or events. The shopping trip becomes a small outing, and the children see where food comes from.
